SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana tied a single season record with its 12th straight win after sweeping a doubleheader over Minot State University (10-18, 2-12 NSIC). The Vikings (28-15, 16-6 NSIC) won the opener 14-0 behind a complete game shutout by Kye Winter before the Vikings scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come from behind to take game two 7-4.

Augustana’s previous longest winning streak was 12 games during the 1989 season from March 23 to April 11.

Nate Hewes and Tony Viger had the hot bats for Augustana in the doubleheader. Hewes was 6-for-7 on the afternoon with two doubles and three RBI. Viger was 4-for-7 while driving in five runs, including an RBI single that tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, which started Augustana’s comeback in game two.

Game one
The Vikings got out of the gates fast scoring 10 runs in the first two innings before going on to defeat the Beavers 14-0 in the opener.

Winter evened his season record to 2-2 with the complete game shutout. The senior struck out five batters while giving up just three hits in the contest.

Jake Petersen scored the game’s first run after walking and stealing second base, scoring on an RBI single by Viger in the bottom of the first. Augustana plated two unearned runs after two Minot State errors to get out of the first inning with a 3-0 lead.

Augustana then exploded for seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the second to push its lead to 10-0. Viger delivered the first blow with a two-RBI single up the middle scoring Petersen and Zach Dibble who singled and walked to start the inning.

Hewes sent a double to left center later in the inning to plate another run before Brian Duxbury sent his second home run of the season over the right field fence, scoring Hewes.

Alex Fink started a four-run fourth inning with a solo home run to right field, his fourth long ball of the season. Zach Dibble later sent an RBI double to right center field to push Augustana’s lead to 12-0 before the Vikings scored two unearned runs, making the score 14-0.

Game two
Augustana got another strong pitching performance from Jordan Milbrath in game two. Milbrath upped his recod to 8-0 on the season tossing 8.0 innings, giving up four runs on six hits while striking out seven batters.

Derek Quame earned his ninth save of the season, making his 19th appearance of the season. Quame is now just one save shy of tying the single season record set by Bret Severtson in 2011.

Hewes gave the Vikings an early lead in game two, sending a solo home run down the right field line with one out in the bottom of the first. Hewes has now hit three home runs on the season.

After going down without a hit in the second and third innings, Minot State was able to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Mitch Olson led off the fourth with a double to right center and eventually game around to score on a groundout by Tyler Stevenson. The Beavers were able to push two more unearned runs across in the inning.

Hewes helped the Vikings get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning after leading off the inning with a double to center field and scoring on an RBI single by Viger, making the score 3-2. Viger was later picked off of first base and Jack Goihl struck out to end the inning as the Vikings were not able to push any more runs across.

Minot State pushed its lead to 4-2 in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Olson. The Vikings were able to make it a one run game again in the bottom of the seventh after a leadoff home run by Winter.

In the bottom of the eight, Viger brought in the tying run with a single to right field, scoring Hewes, who singled with one out and moved up to second base on a wild pitch.

Marcus O’Neill then pinch-hit for Brian Duxbury and sent the game-winning two-RBI single up the middle to make the score 7-4. Quame shut the door in the top of the ninth inning, setting the Beavers down in order.

Augustana returns to action this Saturday with a nine inning game against Dakota State beginning at 1 p.m. at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field.
