Members of the Standing Rock Sioux tribal council have written a letter to a U.S. Congressman detailing their displeasure with a planned summit on foster care in South Dakota.
The tribal council members wrote the letter to Rep. Ed Markey of Massachusetts about the summit, scheduled for May 15-17 in Rapid City.
The summit will focus on Indian child foster care in the state after allegations surfaced that the state was routinely breaking the Indian Child Welfare Act.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs is hosting the summit.
Markey was one of a handful of lawmakers who questioned the BIA about Native American child foster care in South Dakota following a report by NPR in 2011.
The BIA did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
