Elmwood Golf Course Closed For Clean Up

After a long and cold winter, it's finally beginning to feel like springtime outside and people all over the Sioux Empire are taking advantage of the nice weather.

If you're a golfer, it's also the perfect time to break out your clubs, but in Sioux Falls it may hard for you to find a place to actually golf, after the recent storm destroyed many of the city's courses, including Elmwood Golf Course.

Avid golfers like Paul Wotole have been anxiously waiting all winter for the popular course to open, but because the of the extensive damage he'll have to wait even longer, even as the temperatures rise this weekend.

"I haven’t seen anything like this in the spring! I haven't seen anything like this in the 72 years I've been around!” said Wotoole.

Not only are golfers losing valuable playing time this upcoming weekend, but the course is losing a big chunk of revenue too.

"Oh, this is probably $10,000 a day on the weekend, of lost revenue. Maybe a little bit more," said President of Dakota Golf Management, Tom Jansa.

It’s huge loss, said Jansa, not only from their local customers, but from their out-of-town visitors as well.

“We've got calls, you just sit in and the phone rings, and every one of them is Minneapolis and Fargo and places that aren't looking at opening for a couple more weeks and so we’d really like to get open and take advantage of that out-of-town business as well," said Jansa.
 
However, the loss of revenue is something they'll just have to accept, as crews work daily to remove the hanging branches and fallen debris. Crews said they are working as fast as possible to get the course up to the city's code.

"It's a pretty stringent requirement, but in the end it'll have to be done and well get it done as quickly as we can and put it in the rearview mirror," said Jansa.

Jansa said the course is focusing on cleaning up 9 holes at a time, hoping that if the weather cooperates, they will finish with the entire clean up in less than 2 weeks.

Elmwood and Keane remain closed but their practice courses are open.

Prairie Green’s entire facility is open for business.
