Worthington Bank Donates 1,000 Trees

Bookmark and Share

The April 9th, ice storm hit Worthington particularly hard. Piles of branches and limbs still liter sidewalks. But, with so many trees down, one bank is trying to make the best situation on this Arbor Day.

For the first time in a long time, there was a good day for trees in Southwestern Minnesota.

First State Bank Southwest handed 1,000 trees out, on a first come first serve basis.

“I was not excepting this. The line is going down the parking lot quite a ways here,” said Bank President Greg Raymo.

Just 17 days after an ice storm damaged thousands of trees throughout the community.

“The community was devastated. The tree loss in this community was incredible,” said Raymo.

The bank wanted to do something to help out. And those who work with trees on a daily basis say this is the perfect way to do so.

“It'll be a year or two before we find out how much the damage is. But, this is an absolute good start for the trees that we know are going to be gone,” said Ed Lenz of the Nobles Soil and Water Conservation District.

Of those 1,000 trees that were given away, a handful of them were given to the Worthington Middle School.  And some 5th graders got a chance to plant some trees on Arbor Day.

“It's important because well, if we didn't have any trees, than we wouldn't have as much oxygen and we all need oxygen to live, obviously,” said Katie O’Donnell.

The landscape surrounding Worthington Middle School was not spared during the storm and students hope adding a few new trees will go a long way for the environment.

“It’s good. The more trees we have the better the ecosystem is,” said Azael Rodriguez

And as the last of the trees are handed out, hundreds of people all over the area will be planting, trying to help Mother Nature recover from a nasty April ice storm.
