An Arbor Day event at South Dakota State University next week will remind people about the importance that trees play in the community.
The ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Arbor Day Park. A swamp white oak tree will be planted in the park during the ceremony, which is open to the public.
Under the leadership of plant science professor John Ball, SDSU is making an effort to plant more varieties of trees on campus.
The Arbor Day Foundation has designated SDSU's campus as a Tree Campus USA campus. As part of that designation, Ball's students are conducting an inventory of trees on campus. In the past they have helped design landscaping on campus and assisted with tree plantings.
