Mettler Wins & Sets Record At Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa – South Dakota’s Jeff Mettler won the university 3,000-meter steeplechase in a school record time to wrap up the weekend for South Dakota track and field at the Drake Relays.
Mettler won the race in 8 minutes, 51.99 seconds, which broke the previous record of 8:54.50 he set at the Texas Relays on March 28. Mettler leads the Summit League in that event by 19 seconds and now ranks 11th in the West Region and 17th in the nation in the event.
Alexa Duling also placed in the top-five with a fourth in the 400 hurdles in 58.38, which tops in the Summit League by two seconds, 11th in the region and 19th in the nation. It was her best time this season, beating her previous season-best of 59.60.
Rounding out USD’s finishes on Saturday was the women’s 1600 sprint medley team of Amber Ewers, Analisa Huschle, Ashley Sveum and Rachel Weinandt in 13th (4:00.91), and Denton Stephens was 25th in the men’s shot put.
South Dakota will compete at the Howard Wood Relays next weekend.
