Stores Collect Food For SF Humane Society

Bookmark and Share

The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society helps pets in need when no one else can. But what happens when they don’t have enough food to go around? This time however, Lewis Drug Stores in Sioux Falls are stepping up and helping out.

These cute little faces have full bellies and plenty more food in their bowls. But a few days ago, that wasn’t the case.

"A few days ago we only had three to four bags of Purina Puppy Chow left,” said Alma Sehovic, Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.

For the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society, it was a frightening realization.

"We go through about 100 pounds of puppy chow each day, so three or four bags wouldn't have lasted us very long,” said Sehovic.

And when store managers of Lewis Drug heard of the shortage, they decided it was time to help out.

“We sell dog food and pet supplies and all the things to go with it, so why not give back to the community,” said Mike Cole, a store manager for Lewis Drug.

So they put together a food drive called ‘Operation Feed a Pet.’ All six Lewis Drug Stores in Sioux Falls are taking dog and cat food donations. Carts are set out waiting to be filled and any size bag will do. You can either buy some from Lewis or bring your own.

"We will match pound for pound, for whatever dog or cat food you bring in,” said Cole.

The goal is to have people donate 4,000 to 5,000 pounds of food, match it, and then hand it over to the humane society.

“It doesn't matter if it’s just a little three pound bag, doesn't matter, I mean we'll take it all,” said Cole. “Every little bit is going to feed something.”

For those who take care of these little guys, the support from the public has been overwhelming. But it has been in a good way.

"There's not a problem if there is too much because if we get a lot more than we thought we would, that just means we will be stocked up for a longer period of time,” said Sehovic.

And it’s left workers and man’s best friend alike, happy and full.

All Lewis Drug Stores will be taking donations until the end of the week. The humane society said if you wish to donate, they prefer Purina brand food. They said that’s what they feed the animals on a daily basis and any change in their food could upset their stomachs.
