Alcohol offenses and serious felonies have increased in Minnehaha County, and so has spending for the Minnehaha County Public Defender’s Office.
They presented their 2012 budget to the county commission Tuesday.
Traci Smith from the Minnehaha County Public Defender's Office says defending serious felonies that would require 50 plus years in jail increased 19 percent over the last year.
The amount of first offense DWI offences increased almost 9 percent.
Smith hopes the governor’s law enforcement bill will help lower costs in the future.
Almost 800 more cases needed a public defender in 2012 compared to 2011.
