Three men are in custody tonight after police say they stole a car in Sioux Falls and went on a joyride that ended with 5 crashed cars. Sioux Falls Police say the driver of the vehicle is being held on a number of charges including: grand theft, driving while intoxicated, and three counts of reckless driving.
“I look up and I see him screaming around the corner and it hit the first silver car bounced off of that into this red one, into this grey one, which pushed this grey one into another red one,” said Cole McCormick describing the scene on West 15th Street Thursday Morning.
Teodros Haile's day started at Billion Toyota on West 12th Street where Haile and another man stole a Toyota Camry. Police say the keys were in the ignition. By the time police located the car, Haile had picked up another man. But, when the men noticed police officers in the area, everyone except Haile left the vehicle. Haile then sped past Summit Avenue onto 15th Street.
“It was pretty much simultaneously how they pretty much collided together. It sounded like thunder,” said McCormick.
McCormick was on his girlfriend’s front porch on the phone with his boss and watched Haile crash into four parked cars.
“As he got out of the car he went 15-20 yards down there and I hollered at him. He turned around I got a pretty good look at him,” said McCormick.
But Haile kept going.
“I watched him get out of the car and he was moving on down the road pretty fast. He wasn't running. He was trying to hold his pants up. He had them down, you know how they wear them,” said McCormick.
Police say Haile wasn't done stealing for the day.
“We had a lot of officers that were in the area and able to find him near 14th Street and Duluth Avenue where he was riding a bicycle he had stolen after he had crashed the cars,” said Officer Sam Clemens.
“He was pretty scared. You could tell he was rattled. He was in some kind of serious trouble for him to be flying around the corner like that,” said McCormick.
As for the other two other men involved, one was arrested for stealing the car and the other was arrested on previous warrants.
