Crazy Horse Memorial is commemorating the 66th anniversary of sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski moving to the Black Hills to begin work on the carving.
The memorial in the southern Black Hills detonated an 880-ton blast on the mountain on Friday in honor of Korczak Day.
On May 3, 1947, Ziolkowski accepted the invitation from Lakota leaders to carve Crazy Horse Memorial.
The memorial is a mountain carving in progress that will honor Oglala Lakota warrior Crazy Horse. Work on the sculpture began in 1948.
