Augie Women's Golf Heads to Regionals

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana will make its sixth straight appearance at the Central Region Championships on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at St. Joseph Country Club in St. Joseph, Mo.

Missouri Western State University will serve as the host of the Central Region Championships. Augustana played at St. Joseph Country Club earlier this season, taking second place out of 10 teams at the MWSU Candlewood Suites Classic hosted by Missouri Western. The tournament is three rounds, with the top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a team from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championships in May 15-18 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The final Central Region rankings conducted by the NCAA determined the teams competing in the regional tournament. Augustana earned the No. 2 seed while Central Oklahoma earned the No. 1 seed. Northeastern State was seeded third, followed by Harding, Southwestern Oklahoma State, Arkansas Tech, Henderson State, Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul. Four individuals from non-qualifying teams were selected to compete at the regional championships. Northwest Missouri State’s Steph Charteris, Missouri Western State’s Natalie Bird, Tavia Rutherford from the University of Sioux Falls and Ana Summers from Nebraska-Kearney all qualified as individuals.

Augustana enters the regional tournament as the three-time defending Central Region Champions, making its sixth consecutive appearance at the regional tournament. Augustana took second in 2007-08 and third in 2008-09 and has won three straight titles since then, advancing to the NCAA Championships in five straight seasons. 

Last season, Augustana battled back from third place after day one to win the region championship shooting a 54-hole score of 955 to win by 12 strokes.

Augustana is coming off of its fourth straight conference championship this season where the Vikings finished the 72-hole tournament with a 1279 (326-320-314-319), 61 strokes ahead of the next closes opponent. The Vikings placed four of the top five individuals at the conference championships. 

Allie Ostrander won individual medalist honors at the NSIC Championships, marking the second straight season and fifth time in school history that Augustana has had an individual conference champion in women’s golf. Ostrander fired a 25-over-par 313 (75-80-78-80) to win the individual title. The junior brings an individual regional title with her into this year’s region championships. Ostrander won the individual Central Region Championship as a freshman.

Ostrander, Maggie Leland, Marisa Toivonen and Emily Kvidera each earned All-Tournament team at the NSIC Championships. Leland finished in second place at this year’s NSIC Championships shooting a 32-over-par (89-76-74-81).

Toivonen finished in fourth place shooting a 36-over-par 324 (81-86-82-75) followed by Kvidera, who placed fifth at the NSIC Championships shooting a 38-over-par 326 (83-78-80-85).

Jennifer Pederson delivered her best round of the conference championships in the fourth round, shooting an 83 to finish in a tie for 12th at 53-over-par 341. Pederson followed that by shooting her career-low round in Augustana’s dual with the University of Sioux Falls last weekend. Pederson earned NSIC Golfer of the Week honors shooting a one-under-par 71 to win the individual title in the dual.

Kvidera leads the team with a 77.4 stroke average this season and has nine top-10 finishes this season, including eight top-five places and two tournament titles. Kvidera shot her career individual low round of 70 in the second round of the Mustang Invite on Sept. 23.

Ostrander has seven top-five finishes on the season and has won one individual tournament title. She owns a 77.9 stroke average this season and fired her career-low round of 68 on Sept. 30 at the SDSU Invite.

Leland owns an 80.5 stroke average on the season and has picked up five top-10 finishes, including an individual title at the Augustana Invite on Sept. 3. Leland has finished in the top of in three tournaments this season. Pederson has recorded six top-10 finishes during her freshman campaign and has compiled an 81.0 stroke average on the season.
