Suspicious Person In SF, False Alarm

Bookmark and Share

On Friday, multiple police responded to five public schools in Sioux Falls, following a call about a suspicious person carrying a weapon near 38th street and Phillips.

Turns out, there was no weapon; the suspected person was carrying a pool cue with a shoulder strap on it.

The police and school district both agreed that you can never be too cautious when responding to an incident that could have potentially been dangerous and parents said they feel safe, following officials’ decision to guard the schools until the area was all clear.

"I was so thankful that somebody called in and that the police were here," said Mathiesen.

Anne Mathiesen, with her two kids in tow, said she was nervous when she first heard a suspicious person with a weapon, was in the area of her kid's school, and even though the incident turned out to be a false alarm, the quick actions of police and school authorities, make her feel at ease.

"They responded so well, it was great practice for the future," said Mathiesen.

"We're just going to assume it's the worst, until they resolve the situation," said Christensen.

Tara Christensen, a parent and teacher at Lincoln High School said people should never be too cautious, especially if something seems out of place.

"I would encourage anybody if they see anything suspicious to always report it," said Christensen.

Police said it's not illegal to carry a weapon in the public, as long as it's not concealed, however, officials do consider it unusual.

"It's certainly going to raise people's suspicions, especially this day in age, people are going to be more heightened or concerned about something like that, if they somebody with a shotgun or a rifle, they're going to call police," said Clemens.

Luckily in this case, there was no gun; the person of interest was simply carrying around a pool cue, a misunderstanding police don't regret responding to with major police power.

"We would rather respond to an incident and have it be nothing then not being called and having to try and pick up the pieces afterwards," said Clemens.

Response Mathiesen agreed shows police being pro-active.

"Even though there more wonderful people in this world, there are those few that are unstable and uncalculated and I don't think you can ever be too careful," said Mathiesen.

School district officials said Friday was an example of communicating with the police department, responding to potential threats, putting plans into action and ultimately, making sure students are safe.

Police have been in contact with the man with the pool cue he, of course, did not do anything illegal and is not facing any charges.
