Record Cold and Snowy April

Bookmark and Share

The numbers are in and they aren’t pretty if you were looking for spring.  Much of the Upper Midwest experienced one of the coldest and snowiest Aprils of all time.  Record lows were broken on several occasions. Four different snow storms rolled through the area, and highs were struggling just to get above freezing.  Not the greatest start to the spring, unless you wanted the moisture.  In this case, it was a perfect April.  There were below average temperatures leading to very little evaporation and above average precipitation where a lot of it went straight into the ground instead of the rivers, lakes, and streams.  Much of the area improved 1 or even 2 categories in the drought monitor going from the worst category or excessive drought to the middle of the road category or moderate to extreme drought.  Now if the above average precipitation can continue for a couple more months, then the drought may be gone altogether.  Here is a look back at the precipitation and temperatures for the month of April.
