The Fifth Annual ‘Girls on the Run Sioux Falls’ 5K run took place at Falls Park Sunday. And despite the weather, more than 1,000 people came out.
The run is a celebration for girls in third to eighth grade who have completed a ten week program called ‘Girls on the Run,' or 'Girls on Track.' The program is offered through EmBe, formerly known as the YWCA. It focuses on teaching girls how to live healthy, to not do drugs and to have self-confidence.
But for one little runner, the program has taught her much more.
"I've learned that it really hurts to compare yourself to people on magazines and television commercials and stuff like that,” said 9-year-old Avery Miller.
Sundays run was dedicated to Savannah Coon. Coon and her two siblings died last December when their house caught fire in Sioux Falls. Coon was a part of their program.
