SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Pierre's Zach Hanson and Mitchell's Macy Miller were named South Dakota Mr. and Miss Basketball Sunday afternoon in Sioux Falls.
Hanson averaged 20 points a game to help Pierre win their first state title since 1981. Young helped Mitchell to a state runner-up finish and was a key part of their 2012 state championship squad.
Both players will be continuing their careers at the next level. Hanson is heading to Creighton while Miller will stay closer to home at South Dakota State where she'll be joined in 2014 by her former Mitchell teammate Macy Miller.
"Oh yeah I think it's going to be fun. We'll be reliving the dreams that we did in high school!" Young says.
"I just thought out of all the school I had it was the best fit for me. I really like the coaching staff and just the basketball tradition with Omaha and Creighton. I think they're 6th in the nation in attendance, and Omaha's just crazy about basketball so that was really attractive." Hanson says.
The South Dakota High School Coaches Association also named their top coaches from the 2012-13 winter sports season. Hanson's coach at Pierre, Terry Becker, was named the men's basketball coach of the year after directing the Govs' 20-5 state championship campaign.
Parkston's Jared Digmann was named the top wrestling coach. Under his watch the Trojans broke the 32-year old state wrestling tournament scoring record, totaling 164 points in their Class B State Championship.
Other winners are Vermillion's Mark Upward (Gymnastics), Warner's Stewart Bohle (Girl's Basketball), and St. Mary's Cami Bacon (spirit).
Roncalli's Tom Murphy was named top athletic director and Brookings' Jerry Beers top official.
