Throwing a hammer didn't come naturally to Brooke Garner...
"My parents made me do track when I was younger and that's just kind of how I started discus. And when I got to college hammer looked really fun so that's why I started it." Garner says.
Luckily for SDSU the Rapid City native stuck with it.
"Hard work and dedication. I put in my summers, I stayed both last summer and this summer just to keep training and it basically just made me train to the hammer." Garner says.
"There's not an area where she lacks focus. She's a very determined girl, very physically gifted girl and, you know, puts in the work to get the results she's getting." Assistant Coach Tyg Long says.
It showed at the Howard Wood relays were Brooke easily won the Hammer throw
"It means a lot. I didn't win very many when I was here in High School so coming out and winning it in college is actually a pretty cool experience." Garner says.
And despite a weather shortened senior year, Garner wants to end her career on a much higher note.
"The State record has been the goal. I'm about two and a half feet away from it." Garner says.
"That's the big fish that she's looking for right now. I think she's got the ability to go even farther than that 201 record. But we definetly think there's more in the tank." Long says.
"I kinda wanna see my name in those record books. Right now I have the discus State record so I'm just trying to chase the hammer one too." Garner says.
It seems like a natural fit. In Sioux Falls Zach Borg, KDLT Sports.
