Bella's Butterfly Garden Breaks Ground

Bookmark and Share

In honor of a nine-year-old girl killed last March in a drunk driving accident in Mitchell, a memorial is being built for her at an existing, Northridge Park.

The memorial is called "Bella's Butterfly Garden," in honor of Iszabella  Jean Morgan, a vibrant girl who loved to dance, sing and paint her nails.

With the help of Bella's family, community donors and the parks department, the butterfly garden broke ground Monday and is becoming a reality.

"I feel like it’s Christmas," said Morgan.

Iszabella Morgan's mom Jeanie, had a vision about creating a memorial for her daughter Bella for quite some time, but never expected the garden to develop so fast.

Through fundraising and spread the word efforts, more than $30,000.00 has been raised to start construction on the memorial that will remind the community about consequences of drinking and driving, as well as the lives lost, such as Bella's, from the dangerous act.

"The difference she made in a lot of people. You're not supposed to lose your child and for this to be a reality of Bella's Butterfly Garden, it's something I can't thank everybody enough for," said Morgan.

"We'll do all the maintenance," said Roth.

Steve Roth with the Parks Department says his staff will be maintaining the memorial's upkeep indefinitely, which was the park's end of the deal, given enough money was raised by the community for construction costs.

"Weeding of the flower beds, keeping the sidewalks swept off, working on the irrigation system," said Roth.

Not only will Bella's Butterfly Garden be pleasing to the eye with bright colored flowers and uniquely paved walkways, it will be a place for people to come to reflect and remember loved ones who have passed away.

"People will be able to come here and see all the pavers in honor of different people and the more names in the years to come and know the reason why that this was put here," said Morgan.

Bella's Butterfly Garden at Northridge Park is walking distance from Morgan’s home, giving her family easy access to check on the progress day-after-day, watching their dreams build, brick after brick.

The garden is expected to be finished in less than two months; pavers can still be purchased, for more information visit, https://www.facebook.com/events/425051180897634/?ref=ts&fref=ts
