Two Seats Up For Grabs, SF School Board

Bookmark and Share

The Sioux Falls school board makes decisions for 23,000 students and 3,000 employees in the district, a big task that carries a lot of responsibility and come July, two school board seats will be up for grabs.

There are four people running for the two open seats, one of them is current board member, Kent Alberty, who is seeking re-election.

The board dedicates a lot of time to meetings and research like how to spend taxpayer dollars and some tough topics, such as arming teachers and staff on school grounds, which is why these four candidates are trying their best to win your vote.

With four school board candidates, all holding strong opinions and ties to the Sioux Falls community, gaining the support of voters comes with a fight.

Only two of these eager potentials, will gain a seat.

"We need to ensure a challenging curriculum, prepare students for future endeavors," said Leedom.

Matt Leedom grew up in the Sioux Falls School District and now has two kids in the district.

Leedom said he supports manageable class sizes, safety for children and staff and incentive programs for instructors.

"Success of our students, directly relates to the instruction they receive," said Leedom.

"I want to make sure that we're producing successful kids," said Reiter.

Carly Reiter has two kids in elementary school and hopes to make a difference on a bigger scale.

Reiter said she supports technology advances, relationships between staff, community members and parents and extending specialized schools like the Spanish immersion program into middle and high school.

“Seeing the engagement level of our kids and our teachers and our community, the parents, really increase, which ultimately increase our test scores as well," said Reiter.

"I believe in quality education for future and current students," said Schorzmann.

Joshua Schorzmann, lives in Sioux Falls with his wife and daughter.

Through campaigning, Schorzmann said community members have been expressing concerns about raises in property taxes for school programs and the school sentinel bill.

"I don't believe we need to bring guns into the school system, I don't believe our volunteers are needed to come into the school and protect our children.

I think our resource officers do a good job and our district does a good job with that already," said Schorzmann.

"It is my privilege to have served two terms on the school board," said Alberty.

Kent Alberty is the only incumbent running, hoping to see the technology initiative, reading program and new buildings the board has previously approved, come to life.

"I would like to be there to help with those boundary changes, there's a lot of work to be done," said Alberty.

Two seats are up for grabs; it's now up to the voters, to decide who will be the new faces of the Sioux Falls School Board.

The candidates are heavy into their campaigns, leading up to the school board election set for May 21st.

Absentee voting is open now, and will be until three p.m. on Election Day.
