Sioux Falls Businessman Turns To Writing

Bookmark and Share

It's a question many of us ponder throughout our life; If you had a chance to take a different career path, would you?

One Sioux Falls business man always had a passion for writing, but never quite gave it a serious thought...until now.

"A lot of authors will tell you that stories are in their head and they really just want to get it out,"said Author, Randy Derheim.

For Sioux Falls Business man, and Author, Randy Derheim, opening a new chapter in his life was a matter of key strokes.

"It's a great hobby, it's a great release and I enjoy telling the stories,"said Derheim.

For over 2 decades, Randy worked for CitiBank in Sioux Falls, writing and starring in videos for sales and marketing.

Today, Randy no longer works for Citibank, he is a managing partner in a Sioux Falls Hospitality company, which led to his rediscovery of writing.

Even though Randy has been in the hospitality business for over a decades, he's been a writer even longer. But it wasn't until his aunt was diagnosed with A-L-S that his hobby turned into a serious passion.

"She was dying and she was telling us about little things that happened during her day that made her life better...This got into my head,"said Derheim.

...And from there Randy starting picking at that idea and it evolved into his most recent novel, "She Said One." It's about a girl who can tell how much time people have left in their lives after she is mysteriously struck by lightning. The story literally hits close to home. Randy set it in Sioux Falls and puts many places and businesses within the pages , an idea that came naturally to him.

"As I was writing it was easy to visualize the settings,"said Derheim.

But that isnt' the only reason, he says his real goal is to see the story come to the silver screen.

"I would love to have it set in Sioux Falls. It would be a great a great economic engine, wonderful for the community,"said Derheim.

But even though Randy has high hopes for his novel, when it comes to writing fulltime, for a paycheck...he say's he'll pass.

"I think you can ruin your hobbies by making them your profession. I'd never be a pro-golfer and I've played for 35 years; it's a fun thing to do,"said Derheim.

But even though Randy is fine with keeping his passion a hobby, he has a little advice for those looking to make a change in their lives.

"In the end the message is going to be live each day to it's fullest. Work hard when you work and play hard when you play. If you have a passion take advantage of it and do it,"said Derheim.

Authoring a new chapter in life with a few words from the heart.
