A record number of concealed pistol permits have been issued in South Dakota. Through April of this year, the state issued 14,422 permits.
Secretary of State Jason Gant says 18,031 were issued for all of 2012. And just under 15,794 were issued for all of 2011.
Sioux Falls Police Chief Doug Barthel said, "Perhaps there might be more regulations coming down the pipeline be it federal or whatever and I think that kind of created the hype for people to go out and get these permits."
But Chief Barthel says it doesn't necessarily mean more guns are out on the streets.
"It's very possible that people are getting permits and they aren't actually carrying guns concealed, at least not all the time," said Barthel.
Barthel says he believes it's a good thing. It means people are going about the process in the right way.
Barthel said, "We know who actually has the guns and who is going to be carrying them concealed."
In Minnehaha County the same holds true. As of Friday, Sheriff Mike Milstead says 2,300 permits have already been issued in 2013. That's 20 more than what the county issued all year in 2009.
