A Taste of Summer After Long Winter

Bookmark and Share

For all the mothers across the Upper Midwest, I don’t believe you could have asked for a more picture perfect day to enjoy any outdoor family activities. We’ve seen plenty of sunshine over the past couple of days, and there is plenty more in the forecast; but Mothers’ Day temperatures fell at a happy medium.

Here's a look at the warmest temperatures we saw during the day Sunday. Notice some locations barely made it out of the 50s while some across the west actually topped out in the mid 70s. This area of warmer temperatures across the west is only a taste of what's to come.

Looking back over the past winter, many would say it was one that just didn’t want to end. On multiple occasions, May 1st being the most recent, many of us were disappointed with late season snowfalls and temperatures well below average. The persistent winter finally seemed to let go of its grip this week, though. As you can see in the graphic and image below, more seasonable weather conditions stuck around for a longer period of time allowing trees enough time to green out just a bit. It may not be much, but it’s certainly a welcome sight considering it’s long overdue.

Of course, Saturday was somewhat of an outlier thanks to a cold front that passed through Friday night dropping highs back into the 50s for most of us. Though it didn’t last long, our lack of cloud cover over the weekend made Sunday morning anything but seasonable. Outdoor vegetation had to be covered through the night as temperatures dropped below freezing for a little while, leading to widespread frost in much of the area.

We recovered quickly and will continue to recover into the first of the week. As you can see in the following graphics, models continue to suggest that Monday and Tuesday will be the warmest days so far in 2013.

A warm front will begin pushing through from the west Monday, warming temperatures into the 80s and 90s across the region. Since the warm front will pass through the Missouri River Valley early in the day, temperatures will be quite a bit warmer across the west than in the east.

Tuesday will prove to be similar, but a passing cold front from the north and west will pass through the Missouri River Valley early in the day. Since it will not pass through the east until later in the day or even Tuesday night, temperatures will warm into the 90s across the east and only into the 80s across the west.

This cold front will clear by Wednesday morning, cooling temperatures back into the 70s and bringing a slight chance of isolated showers and storms to the southeast. Those should clear out early Wednesday, giving us a break before more showers and thunderstorms return to the forecast next weekend.

Southeast 7-Day Forecast

Northeast 7-Day Forecast

West 7-Day Forecast

Looking at the 7-Day forecast, it looks as though we’ve escaped winter’s grip with overnight lows well above freezing throughout the forecast period. As for the drought, this system forecast later in the week looks to bring quite a bit of moisture compared to some we’ve seen recently. That being said, we’ll be keeping an eye on how this sets up in hopes that it will improve the situation even more.

Of course, stay tuned to KDLT and KDLT.com for the latest on your extended forecast.
