Jacks Sweep Away IPFW In Home Finale

BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State struck for six runs in the second inning and received another strong starting pitching performance en route to an 8-2 victory Sunday afternoon and completion of a four-game sweep of Fort Wayne in Summit League baseball action.

 

Daniel Marra tied a career high with three hits and Adam Bray pitched seven innings of one-run baseball as the Jackrabbits reached its high-water mark of the season with a 29-17 overall record and 14-6 in league play. SDSU has won eight of its last nine Summit League games.

 

Fort Wayne drew first blood on back-to-back doubles by Clay Hathaway and Evan VanSumeren in the top of the second inning, but the Jackrabbits quickly responded by sending 10 batters to the plate in the six-run home half of the inning.

 

Paul Jacobson started the outburst by leading off with a base hit and scoring on a double by Marra down the left-field line. Marra later scored on a wild pitch for the go-ahead run and fellow senior Andrew Melton followed later in the same at-bat with a two-run double to the right-center gap for a 4-1 lead. Al Robbins drove in a run with SDSU’s third double of the inning, with Daniel Telford plating the final run of the frame with a single to center field.

 

Nick Andrews knocked in a run with a base hit in the fifth inning, while the Jackrabbits’ final run of the game scored on an error in the sixth.

 

Meanwhile, Bray was cruising, scattering five hits to go along with two strikeouts and no walks as he improved to 6-2 on the season with his seven-inning outing.

 

The Mastodons posted a run in the eighth against the Jackrabbit bullpen, but Shane Kraemer retired the last four hitters he faced, including two on strikeouts, to secure SDSU’s first home four-game sweep of a Summit League opponent since accomplishing the feat in 2009 against Oakland.

 

Robbins, Telford and Andrews each added two hits as part of the Jackrabbits’ 13-hit attack.

 

Kevin Wirth tallied two hits for Fort Wayne.

 

SDSU, which clinched a berth in the upcoming Summit League Baseball Championship, resumes league action Tuesday with a doubleheader at North Dakota State. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo.
