On any given day, the Mall of America could become Minnesota’s third largest city based on population, and Monday the mall welcomed another visitor, South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard.
A handshake and a smile, if you didn't know better you'd think he was just being Minnesota nice.
Meet the Mall of America's newest visitor, the Governor of South Dakota.
Wedged in the middle of 420 stores, a new kiosk is making a name for itself. Dakota Roots is an organization that keeps those with ties to South Dakota connected to job opportunities in the state.
10,000 jobs the governor is trying to fill.
Governor Dennis Daugaard says, “I'd like to think of South Dakota not as stealing employment but providing refuge.”
And there are many Minnesotans interested.
Like Melody Reimer for example, she just graduated from USD and is trying to decide where she wants to take the bar exam.
Melody Reimer says, “After going to South Dakota and meeting the wonderful people there and just the experience I’ve had there, it's really kind of a toss-up.”
Others are looking to get back to their South Dakota roots.
Shelly Keyes says, "The connection back is what you need to find now that I have my four year degree, I’m hoping there’s more opportunity for me.”
And what better way to find out about those opportunities than to ask the governor.
While most of the questions he answered focused on jobs and the strong economy, every once in a while he'd get a question from outside the box.
Some were persuaded to leave the great white north for the Great Plains.
Reimer says, “I was looking here before, but now after talking with him I’m leaning more towards South Dakota maybe.”
And others politely declined.
Laurie Mikkonen says, “At this point in my life I live in Minneapolis and I really enjoy my life here but I would never rule it out.”
But regardless of their decision, for each of these shoppers meeting the governor of South Dakota is an experience they won't soon forget.
Keyes says, "I’ll see if I can put him on my resume.”
When asked how Minnesota’s Governor Mark Dayton would feel about him coming to the Mall of America, Governor Daugaard said he thinks the governor would support Minnesotans finding better jobs.
Since "Dakota Roots" began six years ago, more than 3,000 Minnesotans have relocated to South Dakota.
