South Dakota has joined with other states and the federal government in a 500 million dollar settlement against Ranbaxy, a generic pharmaceutical manufacturer based in India.
Between 2003 and 2010, Ranbaxy knowingly made and sold drugs whose strength, purity and quality fell below the standards required by the FDA.
South Dakota will receive over 1.1 million dollars which will be split between the federal government and Medicaid.
The South Dakota Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and the South Dakota Department of Social Services assisted in recovering the settlement money.
