28 Workers Claim Million Dollar Powerball

Bookmark and Share

When a group of co-workers in Sioux Falls got to work this Thursday morning, they all received some big news. In fact, it may have been enough to make this one of the most exciting days of their lives—especially when you consider the odds.

When the South Dakota Lottery’s Powerball Jackpot reaches numbers like $350 million like they did Wednesday, a group of employees at Beal Distributing in Sioux Falls will usually throw in a little money to try their luck.

“Even when they only return a dollar, I think it was last time; we got $1.10 each. It was like, ‘Hey! You won!’ and they give you the $1.10,” says Greg McCloskey of Sioux Falls.

This time, it really paid off! Once everyone threw in their $5, one of their other co-workers, Natalie Watson, purchased 140 tickets from 3 different locations, hoping to mix up their luck a bit.

Thursday morning, she was shocked when she realized that one of the tickets she bought at the Lewis Drug Store at the corner of 12th and Kiwanis was the winning ticket.

“I was looking at the numbers against the computer. I bet I looked like 6 times when I saw and I ran across the hallways and grabbed (one of my coworkers) and I was like, you need to come in here; so he came in and we checked them out. He’s like, you’re shaking and then I screamed a little bit,” says Watson.

When she got on the phone to tell her other lucky coworkers the good news, they were in disbelief as well; especially their warehouse supervisor, Dusty Brower, who won on his first try.

“She’s like, we won a million dollars and I’m like, ‘Natalie, don’t mess with me today!’ I said, ‘It’s early,’ and she’s like, ‘No seriously, come up here.’ So I walked through the door and there’s a stream of people up here on their phone texting and I’m like, ‘Oh, maybe this is real,” says Brower.

Though their luck proved to serve them all well, all 28 of them have different plans of what they will do with the $26,000 they end up with once they divide it amongst each other and deduct taxes.

“For me, it’s pretty easy. I’ve been looking at getting a new Jeep so it’s now like, ‘Okay, now let’s just go get it,” says McCloskey.
Of course, many of McCloskey’s other co-workers would rather not spend theirs all in one place, putting some of it in the bank or paying off a little debt. Others plan to splurge and buy their kids a few things they’ve always wanted, like an iPhone.

The Powerball Jackpot is now up to $550 million for Saturday’s drawing.

Also, there was another lottery winner in Sioux Falls Thursday. Robert Hales claimed the $119 thousand Dakota Cash Jackpot. He bought the ticket at the Freedom Valu Center on South Minnesota Avenue.
