Raising Money By Attempting A World Record

Bookmark and Share

There's a world record for a lot of different things these days.

From the largest collection of rubber ducks to the world's hairiest teenager, every day, people are trying to set a new record. That includes a group in Sioux Falls, but their record has a special meaning behind it.

10,000 push-ups.
And $10,000.
All in one hour.

“The idea is if we have 100 students doing 100 push-ups its 10,000 push-ups, but we're also doing a $1 donation per push-up that we are doing, so the goal is to raise $10,000," said Raul Meza, owner of Meza’s Karate America in Sioux Falls.

That goal was on the mind of every single person that filled Meza's Karate America in Sioux Falls on Thursday night, as they attempted to break a world record.

“‘Most Money Raised for a Charity By Doing Push-Ups.’ And we're going to see if we can figure out a way to make it official somehow," said Meza.

While the world record title may not be official, the charity is.

"Echo Kids stands for Educating Children for Healthy Outcomes," said Meza.

The Echo Program was started by Meza, who wanted to create a summer program to teach children how to exercise, eat healthier and most importantly have fun.

"I came up with idea two years ago and said ‘how can we get kids, first of all, active in the summer, but how can we teach them the skills they need to learn as they grow up?" said Meza.

For the last two years, the program received outside funding, but this year it's up to Meza to keep it running. To help keep the program free for Sioux Falls area youth, he decided to raise the $10,000 by doing a little exercise.

"I'm pretty sure we can do it. We probably have 40 (people)so if each person does about 200 we'll be able to get to 10,000,” said Meza.

The group ended up completing a total of 15,600 push-ups and raising almost $3,000.

Now they will go through the official process to see if they were able to break a record.
