Kraning to Dakota State

MADISON, S.D. – Gary Garner, Dakota State University head men's basketball coach, is proud to announce the signing of Viborg-Hurley high school standout Zach Kraning to join the Trojan men's basketball program this fall. Kraning is a transfer from Northern State University (S.D.).

Kraning, a 6-foot-9-inch center from Viborg, S.D., helped lead his high school teams (Viborg and Viborg-Hurley) to five consecutive Tri-Valley Conference Championships. He started all four years in high school (lettered for five years) and was an integral member of the Viborg boys' basketball team to their first-ever state tournament appearance in 2009 with a fifth-place finish. Viborg made a return state tournament trip in 2010 and finished third place. Viborg-Hurley claimed runner-up honors in 2011 State Class 'A' and 2012 State Class 'B'.

Kraning tallied 1,093 points, 709 rebounds and 267 blocks during his high school career. He is a four-time All-Conference selection and was named to State 'B' All-Tournament team in 2010.

Kraning earned Class 'B' All-State Third Team in his senior year (2012), where he averaged 9.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game despite suffering ACL tear (missed nine games and played with the team in the final seven games of the year).

Kraning was a class salutatorian, a member of the National Honor Society, listed on honor roll and earned Academic All-State in football and basketball for his academic success in the classroom.

"We have big expectations for Zach," said Garner. "As he matures and lift weights to get stronger, we think he will develop into a very good player. Zach has good hands and moves around the basket."

Zach is the son of Pat and Lisa Kraning. He plans to study Finance at Dakota State University.
