Drought Conditions Slowly Improve

Bookmark and Share

The month of May started out to be somewhat disappointing, at least for those who aren’t fans of the snow. As you already know, many of us picked up at least an inch across the southeast; but it is important to note that the additional moisture is helping with the drought situation.

The newest drought monitors have come in and things are really looking up. In fact, there are now finally parts of our region that are no longer experiencing any type of drought! When was the last time we could say that? It’s been quite some time and it carried a huge price tag for farmers all across the Upper Midwest, but it’s safe to say that we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Here’s a look at each state individually and where things stand as of now.

Of course, the improvements haven’t come in May alone. We started seeing improvements just a month or so ago, and at this point; we actually stand much closer to average when it comes to rainfall than we did this time last year. Here’s a look at how much rain we’ve seen thus far in 2013 compared to where we should be.

In order to continue these improvements, we need more rain… Thankfully, it’s in the forecast.
