Boy Empties Piggy Bank, Donates To Okla.

One Sioux Falls boy has taken it into his own hands to help the victims of last week’s deadly tornado in Moore, Okla. Saddened by the devastation, the 9-year-old emptied his piggy bank and decided he wanted to donate all the money he’d been saving.

For 9-year-old Dexter Payne, his three piggy banks that consist of a Steelers helmet, a Minnesota Golden Gopher pig, and a basketball, hold treasures other's need much more than he does.

“It makes me feel sad because they have nothing and they are sitting out in the cold,” said Dexter.

After an EF-5 tornado flattened the city of Moore, Okla., Dexter saw the devastation on the news and felt the need to help. So he decided that he would donate the money he'd been saving for college.

“We sorted all of my quarters,” said Dexter.

Dimes, nickels, and pennies, were sorted into piles to make up the $51 he will be donating to the Red Cross. But even more than that, Dexter's mother Jackie said he has inspired their entire household to help. Even his little brothers 6-year-old Mason and 3-year-old Jaden pooled in what little change they had. Jackie said she hopes her son's compassion will encourage others to do the same.

“Being aware of others in need, and having the opportunity to say that you're son came home and wanted to give his money away to those less fortunate, like I said, makes a mom proud,” said Jackie.

Even at his young age, Dexter knows he's lucky to have what he does, and to help others who aren't as fortunate.

“I hope you guys stay safe,” said Dexter.

Dexter plans on donating his $51 to the Red Cross sometime this week.
