Northern State University is dropping golf, tennis and a student service program and shifting the money for those programs to other priorities.
The Aberdeen school also is filling open staff positions only if they are deemed a critical need. School officials say the moves are a response to rising costs in the face of stagnant state aid.
About 35 students will be affected by the cuts. Athletes receiving aid will continue to get it next year if they choose to stay at the school. Students in the Discovery program, which deals with substance abuse, will continue to get help through the NSU Counseling Center.
