Buell Fights Through Injury To Make History

Bookmark and Share

EUGENE, OR --  Bethany Buell became the first Coyote and collegiate athlete from South Dakota to ever win a Division One national championship in the pole vault on Friday.

And that championship moment very nearly didn't happen.

Buell tore ligaments in her shoulder in April during a meet in Texas and actually flew to St. Louis today for surgery.

With a brace on her shoulder she cleared 14 feet, 7 and a quarter inches to win the championship.  This coming a few weeks after she'd contemplated ending her season.

"Kind of gave ourselves a deadline.  Like, if I can't jump 14 before regionals, we'll bag it and just get surgery but God willing I was able to train and get back in it so, it was realy exciting.  I knew I was physically able to jump the height for this, but it's just all about mentally where you're at and being able to stay calm and relaxed.  And for me I just have to focus on my technique and just what it takes to jump well."  Buell said.

Bethany won't compete at the team USA track and field championships in Des Moines in two weeks.  But she will get married in July.
