Layne Somsen Living Baseball Dream

Bookmark and Share

It's been a dream season for Layne Somsen.

"It's just been such a whirlwind of emotions and everything.  I mean, we had, it's just been ups and downs from highs and lows."  Somsen says.

Just two years removed from a nightmare.

"I didn't know why my arm was hurting for the longest time."  Somsen said.

The flame throwing righty from Yankton needed Tommy John surgery for his elbow during his sophomore year, and wondered if his career might be over.

"Couple times actually.  When I wasn't sure what was going on I just knew that I couldn't throw harder than 70 percent without it hurting really bad.  From there it's just hours and hours of rehab."  Somsen says.

Instead Layne returned stronger than ever, winning Summit League Pitcher of the Year in 2013 in leading the Jacks to their first ever NCAA Tournament.

"I think he has confidence in his arm right now and he's pitched solid for us.  I mean, he's got an ERA down in the ones, and every time he takes the ball he gives us a chance to win."  SDSU Manager Dave Schrage says.

And after being drafted by the Cincinnati Reds this weekend, it's what he learned from the nightmare....

"I'm a lot more mentally tough.  Because of surgery I had to go through all those emotions and everything."  Somsen says.

....that will help him live the dream.
