South Dakota State University men’s basketball head coach Scott Nagy announced the hiring Thursday of Joe Krabbenhoft as an assistant coach.

“We are constantly looking for good fits for our program and Joe is a great fit,” Nagy said. “I think it’s a good move for him and I know it’s a good move for us. Our recruiting base is in the Upper Midwest and he is very well known in that area. If you’ve ever seen Joe play, you know he is hard working and we know he’s eager to get started.”

A Sioux Falls native, Krabbenhoft most recently served as video coordinator on Bo Ryan’s basketball staff at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin, during the 2012-13 season. He also was a volunteer assistant at Augustana College in 2009.

Krabbenhoft played at Wisconsin from 2005-09, appearing in a school-record 136 career games — during which the Badgers posted a 100-36 record and made four NCAA Tournament appearances. He was named to the all-Big Ten Freshman Team in 2006 and was a member of the all-Big Ten Defensive Team in 2008, when Wisconsin won both the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. He completed his career in 2009 by earning honorable mention all-Big Ten recognition and was a recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor Award.

Following his collegiate career, Krabbenhoft embarked on a professional playing career that included stints with the NBA Development League’s Sioux Falls Skyforce (2009) and teams in South Korea, Spain and Greece.

Krabbenhoft will join a Jackrabbit program that has reached the NCAA Tournament each of the past two seasons. South Dakota State made its first trip to the NCAA Tournament as a Division I member after winning the 2012 Summit League tournament title, finishing the season with a 27-8 record. The Jackrabbits won both Summit League regular season and tournament championships during the 2012-13 season en route to a 25-10 overall mark.

Krabbenhoft will begin his duties June 17.
