?Paying-It-Forward? One Meal At A Time

Bookmark and Share

Imagine going through the drive-thru to grab a quick lunch, and having your food be completely free.

That's what happened to 21 lucky people at Culver's restaurant in Brookings on Thursday, all thanks to Shane Andersen.

“It’s a good feeling type thing I guess!" said Andersen.

Every month, Andersen selects a restaurant in town and, out of the kindness of his heart, generously pays for 21 lunches.

“Well it was definitely unexpected. It's always a nice surprise. I mean I've heard of things like this before but I've never actually had it happen to me!" said Brookings resident, John Jensen.

"People come through the drive-thru of the restaurant I’ve chosen. I let the restaurant choose who to do it with and I pay for that person's meal,” explained Andersen.

Along with the free meal, he attaches a note.

“I'm 1 in 21 just something to say thank you, so thank you!" said Brookings resident, Stephani Buchholtz.

Andersen started ‘Pay-It-Forward’ back in December as a way to give back to a community he said he hopes does the same in return.

Laura: “Are you going to pay it forward?”
Jensen: “Ya, I'm going to pay it forward. I have to! It's the right thing to do!”

For Andersen, the best part about giving back is just hearing how his good deed made someone else's day.

“Can’t ask for anything better, a day like this and you get a surprise like this, that works great!," said Watertown resident, Roger Martens.

He hopes his act of giving back, encourages others to pay it forward.

“As long as they keep doing that, I'll keep doing this," said Andersen.

Each month Andersen works with a different restaurant in Brookings to carry out his plan.

He says he tries to do a different theme each month to change things up. This month was a Father's Day theme.
