A military bomb squad has disposed of a World War I artillery shell that a Rapid City man found buried in his backyard.
Rich Johnson found the old shell in his backyard on Wednesday. Johnson says he was going to keep the shell until a co-worker advised him to call authorities.
Johnson called authorities on Thursday and within an hour, police, the fire department and the Ellsworth Air Force Base's Explosive Ordnance Team were at his door.
Base spokesman Steven Merrill says four members of the explosive ordnance team responded to the call and disposed of the shell.
Merrill says it's still unclear how the shell got buried in Johnson's backyard.
