Mitchell native Mike Miller won his second NBA Championship with the Miami Heat Thursday night.
During the game, Mitchell residents gathered at Blarney’s to cheer on their favorite player and share memories of Mike.
All eyes were glued on the television screen as game seven of the NBA finals started. Mike Miller is playing in Miami, but 2,000 miles away in Mitchell, his relatives, friends and those who know the name, gathered to cheer him on.
Though Mike Miller has played 13 seasons of professional basketball, Denny Nath has watched him even earlier on the Mitchell hardwood.
“I worked at the high school for 30 years and watched Mike all the way through and play ball,” said Nath.
Denny and his wife Mary’s relationship with Mike goes even deeper. They used to babysit him when he was in diapers.
“When Mike was about three years old his younger sister was born and we babysat them for about three years,” said Nath.
Denny says his favorite memory of Mike is off the court.
“He’s just a special kid. He’s a good passer, player and a real good person. We just love him,” said Nath.
Even Mitchell natives who hardly know him are cheering for number 13.
“I actually have his autograph. His mom taught my sister and she got me his autograph. It was something really cool,” said Weston Deppert.
