A member of George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry has been honored 137 years after he risked his life to help fellow soldiers in the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Peter Thompson was honored Saturday by members of the South Dakota Army National Guard. A solar-lighted flag pole was posted for Thompson's grave.
Army National Guard Chaplain Lynn Wilson praised Thompson. Wilson says Thompson was injured but continued to bring water to wounded comrades.
Thompson served with the 7th Cavalry commanded by Custer but, because his horse played out, was not with Custer's group when it was wiped out. Thompson joined the nearby command of Gen. Marcus Reno as the battle continued.
He died at the State Soldiers Home in Hot Springs in 1928.
