SD Penitentiary Staff Prevent Escape Attempt

Bookmark and Share

A criminal complaint has been filed against two people for conspiring to commit aggravated assault on correctional staff members from the South Dakota State Penitentiary and to aid in an attempted escape of a state prison inmate.

Penitentiary staff members alerted Special Security staff at the prison of suspicious activity involving a planned escape attempt during a medical transport of inmate Silver McClanahan on June 25. Special Security staff at the Penitentiary then notified the Division of Criminal Investigation of their findings. The planned escape attempt was prevented before it could be carried out.

McClanahan began serving a life sentence for 1st degree manslaughter out of Brown County on June 29, 1994.

Former inmate Lloyd White Face is one of the people named in the criminal complaint. He received a 4 year, 7 month sentence for grand theft in November of 2004 and a consecutive 5-year sentence for 3rd degree rape. All of those convictions are from Pennington County. He is currently on parole supervision in the Sioux Falls area.

“Public safety is our ultimate responsibility and security is something we deal with every minute of every day,” said Corrections Secretary Denny Kaemingk. “I commend the Penitentiary staff members on their alertness and thorough work in preventing this plan. No correctional officers were injured and no members of the public were endangered as the inmate never left the confines of the facility.”

“Our staff is our greatest resource and often the first and last line of defense in preventing incidents from happening,” said Penitentiary Warden Darin Young. “I’m proud of their response in preventing this before it could take place.”

Kaemingk said the investigation by DCI and Special Security at the Penitentiary is ongoing. Additional information may be released in the future as the investigation allows.
