Armed Escape Attempt Thwarted At State Pen.

Bookmark and Share

An inmate's plot to escape the South Dakota State Penitentiary has been foiled by the prison's staff and now two non-inmates are back behind bars.

Silver McClanahan who is serving a life sentence for 1st degree manslaughter, attempted to flee during a medical transfer.

“I'm sure there are inmates here that are constantly thinking about how to get out of here,” said Warden Darin Young.

One Inmate tried to free himself from the walls and wire that prevent escape at the South Dakota State Penitentiary on Tuesday.

Silver McClanahan who has been serving a life sentence for 1st degree man slaughter since 1994, faked an illness in hopes to be transported to Avera Mckennan Hospital earlier this week.

According to the South Dakota Department of Corrections and court papers, Lloyd White Face who was out on parole, and Jamie Lynn Klinghagen, purchased rifles and a shotgun to be used in the assault of a corrections transport officer.

“What was purchased shows the seriousness and the potential for violence that was there,” said Young.

But, before the transport could take place, the escape was thwarted.

“They were very alert. They were vigilant with their responsibilities and they were responsive. And they averted a very serious plan that could have really hurt somebody,” said Young.

Jamie Lynn Klinghagen and Lloyd Lee White Face are being held on conspiracy and aiding and abetting

The prison is equipped with a 24 hour nursing staff. So, for a prisoner to be transported, an illness would have to be severe.

“There are some on occasion that we have to go get treatment or go to a specialist,” said Young.

Tuesday, only one man was behind bars. But, after a failed prison break, two more may face time in the very place they tried to free an inmate.

No one working at the prison was hurt when the escape was stopped.

This is still an ongoing investigation and the Department of Criminal Investigation is still withholding details of the escape attempt and exactly how it was thwarted.
