SF Family Remembers Murdered Son

Bookmark and Share

The father of a Sioux Falls boy who has been missing since Mid-May said that the body found Wednesday in Montana is his son, 18-year-old John Swain. However, authorities have not publicly confirmed the identity of the body.

Officials with the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Department were serving a search warrant at a home in Poplar, MT., Wednesday when they discovered the body. Swain had recently moved from Sioux Falls to Bismarck to find work.

Authorities said they believe he was killed by 25-year-old Theo Crowe who’s in custody in Williston on unrelated charges. Poplar, MT., is Crowe’s hometown.

Thursday night John’s family remembered his life.

“Smiling, enthusiastic, work hard, play hard, sleep hard young man,” said David Swain, John’s father.

A kitchen table full of pictures are just some memories that have captured the short life lived by 18-year-old John Swain.

“We knew that John was missing on the May 11. And since then, we've had emptiness,” said David. “It's a big mystery because you don't know where he's at.”

John was adopted from Hong Kong when he 3-years-old, and his dad said ever since then he has filled their home and hearts with love, laughter and joy. David said he knew something was wrong when John didn't answer his phone. He said like a typical teenager, he always had it in hand.

“We wouldn't want to eat, because most things we eat around here are the things he likes,” said David.

David said John moved to Bismarck right before he disappeared. Before he moved to Bismarck, John moved out of the family's home to live with a friend in Sioux Falls. But John always came home for Sunday night dinner. And David recalls like it was just yesterday, the last time he said goodbye to his son.

“The last time I saw him, he had been here for dinner,” said David. “He walked down to his room to pick up some stuff. He stopped in the hallway there and I said ' John, you don't have to leave, this your home.' And he said, 'I know.' I said, ‘Well I want you to know before you leave that I love you.' He said, 'I know dad.' And then he gave me a little kiss on the check.”

And it’s a goodbye he said he never thought would be his last. But David and his wife Pat said they know they can't change anything. And all in all it gives them peace to know their son is in a better place.

David also said John’s greatest loves in life were skiing and soccer. John was a ski instructor at Great Bear and loved teaching special education kids how to ski.
