Fireworks Season Begins

Bookmark and Share

When lighting up this season, there are a few safety tips to keep in mind. It’s important to keep them in mind especially if you are lighting them with children.

“We do know that 40 percent of the injuries with children occur under the age of 14,” said Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Fire Chief Jim Sideras.

Officials say 70 percent of those injuries happen to males who are under 14 too. They say these injuries to children would decrease if parents were just present and remembered to pay attention. The directions may be different on each firework. Some can get hotter than you may think.

“Sparklers seem very innocent. Sparklers can burn at 18-hundred degrees Fahrenheit,” said Sideras.

Officials do give tips if you happen to get burned. Fire have a cell phone in case you need to receive medical attention. Know your location in case there is a major problem. Also, have water nearby in case you need to use it.

“The best first aid treatment for a burn is to cool the skin. We recommend 10 minutes of cold water under a tap or faucet cooling skin off and seeking medical attention if you feel you need a doctor visit,” said Sioux Falls Fire Marshall, Dean Lanier.

Most fireworks are illegal within the city limits of Sioux Falls. A general rule, if they fly or make noise, you could end up with a $95 fine. Snakes, sparklers and smoke bombs are ok to use.
