Schools Slow To Use Law Allowing Armed Teachers

Bookmark and Share

South Dakota school districts can arm teachers, other staff or volunteers with guns under a new state law taking effect Monday. But officials say they know of no district that has taken formal steps to designate so-called sentinels to beef up school security.

The bill's main sponsor, Rep. Scott Craig of Rapid City, says some districts are considering arming people. But he says school boards likely will move slowly in deciding whether to take part.

Craig says the threat of armed people will deter attacks on schools. But opponents say the program could lead to accidental shootings.

Other laws taking effect Monday include revamping South Dakota's criminal justice system, banning beginning drivers from using cell phones, and extending in some cases the waiting period for a woman seeking an abortion.
