Opponents of a new ordinance allowing downtown Mitchell businesses to sell wine outdoors have submitted petitions to bring the matter to a public vote.
If the petitions have enough signatures, city residents will decide the matter next June.
The City Council last month approved the sale of wine at certain outdoor areas in the city's downtown, with certain restrictions. Some businesses believe it will boost their bottom lines.
The Rev. Carroll Torberson led the petition effort because he believes the ordinance will start a snowball effect and lead to an expansion of alcohol sales.
