Cycling Across The Country For Veterans

Bookmark and Share

In just seven weeks, eight high school students from the East Coast will travel 3,500 miles all on their bikes. They started in Oregon and will travel to New Hampshire. It’s a total of 3,500 miles.

“We have a couple of breaks every day. Sometimes depending on mileage of the day and to fuel us and give us water,” said cyclist Mandi Paine.

They are cycling mainly on highways and in some cases, the interstate. They are traveling about 100 miles a day. It’s an experience Mandi Paine says is pretty incredible.

“It’s a sense of accomplishment. I never thought I could do this. What’s getting me through each day is knowing what it will feel like when I finish,” said Paine.

It’s all for “Ride 2 Recovery.” It’s a non-profit organization that supports rehabilitation programs for mentally and physically injured veterans. For Max Vivado, it’s about trekking across the country for those who served for it.

“My grandfather was part of the Navy and my cousin is in the Marines. I have a touch in my heart for that,” said cyclist Max Vivado.

He admits biking for 48 days has its struggles.

“I had a really bad day. I was down on myself and I finished last coming back. It’s just that attitude of not losing sight,” said Vivado.

Thursday the cyclists hit the 2,000 mile mark and are approaching the end of their 4th week, with 3 more weeks to go.
