Big changes will happen soon to the north east side of Sioux Falls. City officials announced Monday that they received a $1.2 million grant.
It's a grant that will go toward road construction to mature more businesses in that area. The project is called Sioux Empire Development Park 8.
This is the third time the city has applied for a grant to develop the north east side of Sioux Falls. Now, third time's the charm.
Right now, Bahnson Avenue does not extend to Benson Road. The city wants to expand Bahnson Avenue from East 60th Street north to East Benson Road. Extending a road that will be a little over a mile long.
"Nearly 300 acres will open up for commercial development, nearly 3-thousand jobs will be hosted when park has fully developed," said Community Development Director Darrin Smith.>
What you see here is the open space of undeveloped land between the two roads, but it won't be undeveloped for long. The project is designed for business growth, as well as providing access to other major roads.
"As the development occurs, this has been an area to mature just like what's happened west of 1-229. Only this will now happen east and also to the south as well," said Mark Cotter, Public Works.
This road comes with a little bit of a price tag.
"Exactly half of the dollars needed to design and build the road. The other half will be paid for by the property owners that have land abutting what Bahson Avenue," said Smith.
Some land has been purchased by businesses already. While other lots are still available.
"Opportunities in the western section for it to have a corporate feel to it and maybe based on more technology based businesses," said Slater Barr of Sioux Falls Development Foundation.
Over the next 5-10 years as this park develops and it will. It will become a major gateway into the city of Sioux Falls and develop north east part of the community that we don't have today but that's what we look forward to," said Smith.
