Monday, a meeting between Oglala Sioux Tribe President Bryan Brewer and Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman ended in less than five minutes.
Brewer says he requested a private meeting with Nebraska’s governor to discuss possible solutions to the sale of alcohol in Whiteclay. Brewer says the governor was disrespectful towards him, and felt the governor had no intention of discussing solutions to the alcohol issues he believes stem from sales in the town of Whiteclay.
Brewer said, “Basically he told me, he said, 'alcohol is not my problem, it's not Nebraska’s problem, it's your problem.' And I went with some solutions of things we could do, but he refused to listen to me."
Brewer says he plans on working with the Indian commission and the four tribes of Nebraska to seek a solution to alcohol sales and he says they have already given him their support.
