A group of students with a passion for marching band had the opportunity to learn from some of the best Tuesday. A professional group called ‘Carolina Crown’ was at Howard Wood Field teaching high school students from around the Sioux Empire some new skills.
For 156 students from across the Sioux Empire, Tuesday brought a unique opportunity for them to really perfect their sound.
“Carolina Crown has been gracious enough to offer us a little clinic to help us improve our marching and playing,” said Elliot Douma, a junior at Roosevelt High School.
Douma has been playing the baritone in the schools marching band for the last two years. All day he was busy learning new ways to help himself standout in his band, while also remaining in sync.
“We just are getting tips on how to make marching band easier,” said Douma. “Like your weight balancing and how to play while you march a little better.
After that lesson, it was on to something a little more harmonic.
“Now we are just working on music to make sure we are in tone and in tune with each other,” said Zach Person, a senior at Washington High School.
Person’s instrument of choice is the French horn.
“The hardest thing is probably making sure that everyone in the band are doing things the same way so it looks clean on the field,” said Person.
After the long day of learning the students got the chance to watch their teachers from the day in action. And for band directors, it's the best lesson these students could have.
“No one has one teacher that teaches them everything. They all learn pieces from all sorts of different people who are great. Especially when these people have been doing it professionally,” said Mark Diischer, Director of Bands at Washington High School.
“For me it’s just inspiration,” said Douma. To be able to see all these phenomenal players and marchers, with their stellar posture and playing, it just gets me excited about marching band again.”
After the clinic, a competition was held. Six bands from across the country battled it out on Howard Wood Field. Two of those bands were from Sioux Falls.
