Old Stained Glass In SD Capitol To Be Restored

Bookmark and Share

Work will begin July 29 to restore the century-old stained glass in South Dakota's state Capitol building in Pierre.

The four large skylight installations in the Capitol rotunda dome, House and Senate chambers and above the grand staircase will be removed, restored and reinstalled in a project expected to be completed by September 2014.

Paul Kinsman, commissioner of the state Bureau of Administration, says an assessment found problems caused by age, gravity and design weaknesses in the stained glass that was installed in 1909.

Kinsman says the glass is bowing badly enough in spots that it could fail if it's allowed to get much worse.

The project will cost $2.7 million. The money will come from the Bureau of Administration's fund for maintenance and repair.
