SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- One month ago the Sioux Falls Canaries were one of the worst teams in the American Association.
Ever since flipping the calendar to July, they've been one of the league's best.
The Birds won their 5th straight game last night and have won 10 of their last 13. This comes on the heels of a disasterous June that saw them lose 14 out of 15.
So how'd the Canaries turn it around?
Well, they started having fun!
"It's just kind of baseball, you know, sometimes you go through those streaks. We had that Texas streak, everybody kind of got down, we had a couple meetings. Sound like guys weren't having fun, you know, we were losing, skip tells us just have fun. Go out there, play the game to have fun. And all of a sudden we started having fun playing the game and all of a sudden we started winning." Canaries Outfielder Nick Van Stratten says.
"You know if you go out and you play baseball properly it puts you in a position to win baseball games. You start with good starting pitching, good timely hitting, and then good defense and a good bullpen and you end up winning some games." Canaries Manager Steve Shirley says.
If the streak is going to get the Birds back into the playoff picture, they'll need to keep it going tomorrow night when they open a three game series with Fargo/Moorhead. The first place RedHawks are nine games up on the Canaries in the Northern division standings.
