Mayor Mike Huether will now have to campaign if he wants to keep his job next year. Sioux Falls city councilor Greg Jamison confirms he will be running for the city's top job in 2014.
"Serving on the city council has certainly given me a lot of insight to what's happening in city government," Greg Jamison said.
Jamison says his current role will make him a better leader if he's elected mayor in 2014.
"It's a unique perspective that I can bring into the administration's office and help bridge a lot of communication gaps, build on consensus, cooperative natures," Jamison added.
Jamison says he plans to file his intent next week, which would make him the first official candidate in the mayoral race.
But this revelation wasn't exactly what Jamison had planned. He created his campaign Twitter account, @jamisonformayor, which spelled out his intentions.
"We started a Twitter account and a Twitter handle, which is fairly new to me," Jamison added.
But the plans have been in place for some time now. Besides the Twitter account, Jamison has also secured a website, which should be up and running soon.
"Our final decisions were really made last week to get into this race. We've been doing a lot of work in the months prior to this to make sure that it's the right decision," Jamison said.
Born and raised in Sioux Falls, Jamison has represented the city's southwest district since 2008.
In the midst of his second term, he could find himself campaigning against Mayor Mike Huether. Huether has said he will seek re-election, but he hasn't formally announced his plans.
"I'm running for the office. I'm not necessarily running against Mike Huether, if he should formally get in the race. He's surely made comments that he is going to be running again, but my intentions right now are to run for the office of mayor," Jamison said.
Jamison declined to discuss the specifics of his campaign. He says those details will be spelled out next week.
In response to Jamison running for mayor, Huether says, "I have no time frame in mind to announce my re-election campaign, because I have plenty of exciting things on Sioux Falls plate that I am more focused on right now."
